FCS 3D Red Tip Fin

FCS 3D Red Tip Fin

Designed by John Harris and developed in conjunction with FCS and 3 X Masters world champ Gary Elkerton, the 3D is a true fusion of traditional techniques, the latest innovation and technology.

The 3D Red Tip adds a new dimension to your surfing experience. The unique hydrofoil-like tip creates speed and drive through drawn out turns while creating lift and uncompromised maneuverability through short, fast arcs. The 3D glides over flat spots and increases control in the wash.

“All round, it’s got heaps of drive and is more stable at high speed” – Gary Elkerton

As the tip of the fin is parallel to the board in water, the 3D Red Tip holds speed through on-rail turns (where traditional fins are prone to pop or stall), converting that speed into controlled power.

“Of course I’m biased, I love it… and it loves you back, when you push it.” – John Harris

The Red Tip was first created in 83’. I was on my way home from Uluwatu and called into a bar named the Casablanca for a few after surf beers. They ended up having a beer drinking contest and I made the final. I was standing there waiting for it to start and this big American guy shoved his face in mine and said ‘We’ve got you now in the America cup, 3 – 1.’ I didn’t know what he was talking about, though he stirred me enough to win the final. Now I had this America’s cup thing in my mind.

3d-redtip-photo-02After I returned home, it was in the news about Ben Lexcen’s secret winged keel and we ended up winning, what turned into a national triumph. I kept thinking what this keel might look like , they never showed it. One day I grabbed a block of foam and shaped a fin out of it. I figured it had a concave on the bottom and I thought if it didn’t drag, the board might get up and run on the concave. I glassed it up and put it on this nice little 6’ 1” swallow and when I surfed it, my mind was blown. The board and fin were electric. My brothers and friends couldn’t help but notice and they had me making them ones for themselves. My brother Robert was even making a living at one stage converting guys back fins.

I later went down to Sydney and saw the boat and keel and was stoked it was nothing like mine. The Ben Lexcen keel was like 2 fins at different angles, put onto the centre keel, mine was all curves.

Multi Fins starting making them under license to me and we sold 10,000 in the first three months. By the late eighties the tails on boards started to get too thin for back finboxes and it seemed the design had run it’s race. This was not however the way things panned out…
