John begun surfing on a balsa board at Dee Why in 1962 at seven years of age, got sponsored by Midget in ‘69, began shaping in ‘70, surfed for Australia in the test match against Hawaii in ‘78 then competed on the world shortboard tour on and off till ‘85 – including the Pipe Masters in ‘81.
He won the opens of the first longboard comp he entered at Manly in ‘85 and finished 6th on the ASP World Longboard Tour in ‘87, won the Australian Open 9’ title in ‘90 and toured with the Australian team to Barbados and Tahiti – actually he has been selected in Australian teams over three decades.
Besides his own labels, John has shaped for Shane, McCoy, Terry Fitz, Sam Egan, Nat, Bill Cillia, Greg Noll, Brewer, Hamilton, Da Hui, Warren Cornish and Bob McTavish (who he’s known since he was nine). He made Luke Egan and (Pipe Master) Ronnie Burns their first thrusters.
At various stages, the wave rich areas of Norah Head, Lennox, Byron and the Goldie have all been home. During the 70’s he did numerous trips to Hawaii but then got hooked on Bali and Indonesia in the early 80s and has been a regular visitor ever since – it shows!
